ACC Recap: Extracurricular Activities–The Role They Play in the College Application Process   
In this week's ACC, we discussed with parents the importance of extracurricular activities on college applications, the various types of extracurricular activities, the timelines for planning such activities, and how parents can support their students' involvement in these activities. We also used student case studies to analyze how extracurricular activities are showcased in applications and what admissions officers look for in a student's list of extracurricular activities. This term's Student-Parent-Teacher Conferences (SPTC) will take place on Wednesday, November 20. We have received your registration, and will share the data with you in grade level parents group.  

Don't forget that this isn’t the only time to meet with teachers. They can also speak with you one-on-one during the weekly standing meeting times. 

Please note:

  • These are not required meetings; please make an appointment based on your family's needs. 
  • You can book up to the next 30 days of meetings, and each teacher has 30 mins available to meet parents at these fixed times every Thursday and Friday. 
  • The SD operations team will email you the meeting location before the meeting date. 
  • Click here to make your appointment.

Open.Ed | Parenting with Vision: Inspire Future Leaders

We are honored to have Ms. Jingjie Huang—a distinguished expert in Chinese and Western parenting education and a recipient of the Bingxin Children's Book Award—host a session at Avenues on November 18. She will explore strategies for nurturing parent-child relationships through "Parenting with Vision". Her insights aim to inspire children's independent learning abilities and equip them with future-oriented skills.

Joining Ms. Huang in a panel discussion will be Ally Wu, Senior Advisor at Avenues Shenzhen, and Jeff Clark, Chairman of the International Advisory Board at Avenues Shenzhen. They will discuss about the skills necessary for future talents and the nurturing of intrinsic motivation for learning.

On November 23, we are excited to host the second installment of the OPEN.Scholar public lecture series. Xinyan Zhao, a parent at Avenues and a research assistant professor at the SUSTech Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, invites all students and parents who are interested in the world of optics. Join us as we delve into the human exploration of the and physical properties of light. Professor Zhao will guide us through the nature and characteristics of light, as well as its applications across daily life, art, and science. She will bring her own experimental equipment, offering the audience a unique opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments.

Open.Scholar | Understanding the Adolescent Brain: Family Education from a Neuroscientific Perspective

How can parents support their children when they lose interest or encounter difficulties in learning? On November 30, we are thrilled to have Cheng Fei, an Avenues parent, Senior Education Director at the Institute of Brain Cognition and Brain Disease Research, Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and a doctor at the School of Education, Peking University, to deliver special lecture on family parenting education. He will delve into the adolescence from a brain science perspective and share insights on how to support our children during their teenage years.
