Kindergarten Updates

Dear ELC Families,

As spring arrives and the world around us begins to awaken, we are reminded of the magic and wonder that nature offers. In a similar way, poetry opens up new possibilities for how we see and interact with the world. Its rhythmic patterns, repetition, and creative language invite both children and adults to pause, listen, and reflect. Poetry nurtures the imagination and provides a space for children to explore sound, meaning, and emotion through words. Next Friday, March 21 is World Poetry Day. We hope you will recognize this day along with our school community by reading or reciting poems with your child this week.

In our classrooms, we focus on the patterns in poetry and songs that help young children understand the flow of language—whether through rhyme, alliteration, or rhythm. These patterns support their early literacy development and offer them an opportunity to connect deeply with language in a playful, memorable way.

In celebration of World Poetry Day, we would like to share a poem by the beloved Shel Silverstein, whose work resonates with children for its simplicity and heart:

This poem perfectly captures the blend of hesitation and courage children often feel as they approach new experiences. Through its simple, rhythmic structure, it encourages them to reflect on their brave steps into the unknown.

We encourage you to read poems with your children, noticing how the patterns in words invite curiosity and spark joy. Whether it’s a moment of quiet togetherness or a lively conversation about the rhythm of a favorite poem, poetry has a special way of connecting us all.

Warmly,

The ELC Leadership Team

Let's work together to ensure that children can enjoy a happy and wonderful bilingual learning experience during their growth. We look forward to your arrival!

RUCKUS MONTH

March has started, and so has Ruckus Month! Students across divisions are diving deep into a variety of learning opportunities to further explore technology, innovation, digital well-being, AI, and programming - through special lessons, events and visits.

Based on the registration data collected earlier, we have finalized the Ruckus series of events that will take place throughout the entire month of March, with no activities scheduled on weekends. We appreciate the engagement of our parent community and are excited to welcome some families this month who have been eager to collaborate and will interact with our students by sharing tech-related findings, products and services. This will broaden our students’ horizons and help them understand the impact that tech has had and will continue to have in shaping the world around us! And this is just the beginning!

Avenues at the Moment

Avenues Students Participate in the International High School Team Math Competition in Suzhou

From March 7 to March 8, four Avenues Shenzhen students Alfred and Josie (Grade 10), along with Reed and Madeline (Grade 12), traveled to Suzhou to compete in the 2025 International High School Team Math Competition.

This competition, which was open to high school teams from across Asia with students aged 15 to 18, consisted of six rounds and attracted 30 participating teams. Conducted entirely in English, the event tested teamwork, problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and mathematical knowledge.

For Avenues students, this was more than just a math challenge—it was a valuable opportunity to further build resilience under pressure, broaden their horizons, recognize their strengths, and develop a competitive edge.

Avenues faculty members Catherine and Luke, who accompanied the team, were deeply impressed by the students’ unwavering collaboration and support for one another. Despite the difficulties they faced, they remained determined, encouraged each other, and tackled challenges together, fully embodying the resilience and perseverance of Avenues students.
