Dear Avenues Families,
At Avenues, we believe education should transcend the traditional boundaries between "language" and "subject." Our immersive bilingual program goes far beyond teaching two languages—it aims to cultivate agile thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and empathetic global citizens.
How does this happen? Here, we’d like to share some insights into the language learning journey before leading into the Avenues experience. At Avenues, students experience a learning environment where Chinese and English are not simply taught in parallel—they are organically integrated into a dynamic process rich with intellectual exploration and cultural discovery. This holistic approach helps students not only acquire vocabulary and grammar, but also understand the subtle differences in thinking, cultural values, and ways of constructing knowledge that each language embodies.
For example, in our Nursery program, we focus on creating a secure language environment with multiple learning pathways. Children naturally engage with both languages through songs, stories, and role-playing. In one “Animal Exploration” project, teachers used both Chinese and English to guide children in imitating animal sounds and learning about behaviors—all within a stimulating context that helped build initial language intuition and confidence, marking their first step into bilingual learning.
In Primary, language learning becomes more systematic. Students not only participate in dedicated structured literacy lessons, but also join project-based learning experiences co-designed and co-facilitated by Chinese-speaking and English-speaking teachers. For instance, in a Grade 4 “Urban Sketchers” project, students conducted interviews, produced posters, and created travel guides in both languages. Teachers also lead by example, embodying the idea that “everyone is a language learner.” This cross-linguistic, interdisciplinary approach has yielded remarkable results: today, our fifth graders not only express themselves eloquently in Chinese, but also actively participate and inquire in all-English project-based classes.
By the middle grades, bilingualism has become a tool students wield with ease. You might hear students debating “Environmental Protection vs. Economic Development,” using English to present data and Chinese to add cultural perspective—switching flexibly between languages to express their ideas with greater precision. This ability is evident not only in the classroom, but also in club activities and international exchanges. For example, during Model UN competitions, students choose strategically between Chinese and English for speeches and negotiations based on the topic and audience, demonstrating superb language mastery and cross-cultural communication skills. As an educator, I, too, am constantly immersed and growing within this bilingual environment. This is because we teachers and students learn from and co-create with one other. At Avenues, teachers and students jointly build a learning space where languages and cultures converge. Every member of our community gradually develops an upward-growing vitality.
In the upper grades, students use both languages to conduct deep research in fields they are passionate about. Whether writing scientific papers in English or conducting social innovation research in Chinese, language serves as a powerful foundation for their academic and personal growth. For instance, one student recently completed an independent research project on artificial intelligence in English, then joined an online workshop in Chinese to exchange ideas with experts from around the world—being bilingual didn’t hinder her; instead, it opened doors to broader resources and opportunities.
Through this thoughtfully designed and reflective learning process, students gradually develop core competencies that will benefit them for life:
These competencies are fully activated within our project-based learning framework. Our goal is for every student to grow into an individual who thinks and acts in two languages, achieving profound cross-disciplinary understanding.
What is unfolding at Avenues is the transformative vision we pursue: a journey of interpreting the world through language, through which students grow into confident, capable, and connected individuals, ready to contribute meaningfully to a complex and ever-evolving world.
We sincerely thank you for joining us and your child on this journey.
Warmly,
Mia Xu

Severe Weather Response Guide
Recently, the frequency of extreme weather increases. According to the government guidance documents, all schools in the city, regardless of region, will cancel school in the event that the municipal meteorological observatory in any area of the city (excluding the Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone) issues the following meteorological disaster warning signals:
If the above warning is issued before students have arrived at school, students should not come to school and should stay in a safe place. If the warning is issued during the school day, we will ensure all students are safe (including students on the school bus) until the warning signal is lifted.

Avenues English Collective | Learn English. Build Community. Gain Insight.
Background:
Language is more than a means of communication — it’s a powerful bridge that brings people together. At APA, we are deeply committed to supporting each family’s journey and building a strong, connected community where parents and the school collaborate closely in every child’s growth.
With this vision, we are excited to launch the Avenues English Collective. While the program offers an opportunity for parents to strengthen their English skills, its deeper purpose is to foster an open, inclusive, and supportive space for meaningful connection. For current families, it’s a way to deepen relationships and build a more united parent community. For prospective families, it offers a unique window into Avenues — a chance to experience our culture firsthand and better understand our educational values.
We believe that when parents and schools grow together, the path forward for every child becomes brighter, stronger, and more joyful.

We warmly welcome all interested parents—regardless of English proficiency—to join our first Avenues English Collective Information Session. Kyokushin Karate, originally rooted in Chinese martial arts and later developed in Okinawa and Japan, is now a globally practiced and respected style of full-contact stand-up martial arts. It emphasizes powerful, practical techniques using fists, legs, elbows, and knees, alongside full-body movement. Training sessions incorporate both aerobic and anaerobic exercise, as well as bodyweight strength training—offering a well-rounded workout that builds coordination, cardiovascular endurance, agility, and overall fitness.
The club is led by a team of three experienced female instructors, each with years of dedicated Kyokushin practice. With a focus on safety, health, and steady progress, they will guide participants through each session with care and expertise—inviting you to discover the strength, discipline, and enjoyment of martial arts.
