ELC Updates
Dear ELC Families,
Thank you for actively engaging in our recent parent-teacher conferences; your partnership strengthens our collaborative efforts to support your child’s learning and development. It was a pleasure discussing your child's strengths and areas of opportunity. More importantly, we gained a better understanding of your child’s unique traits from your parenting perspective – a crucial component for us to best support their growth at school.
We look forward to maintaining relationships to support your child this academic year. Whether you continue your conversation through email, phone calls, volunteer opportunities, quick chats at the gate or all of the above, we look forward to an authentic collaboration.
In addition to communications between parents and teachers to bridge between home and school, we encourage you to ask open-ended questions that spark conversations with your child about their day at school. Here are some suggestions:
These questions aim to encourage your child to share their experiences, fostering a sense of connection between the school day and family life. You can always adapt them to your child's age and communication level. It can be helpful to choose a question or two you ask regularly to build a time for reflection into your family routine; on the commute home, at dinner, or bedtime are all good options.
Lastly, keep an eye out for upcoming events and activities, such as celebrations of learning, Avenues Community Connections (ACC), and class field trips. Your participation enriches the learning environment and strengthens our vibrant community. We appreciate your ongoing support and commitment to your child's education.
Warmly,
The ELC Leadership Team

Presenters: Jade Kerchhoff, Lisa Chung, Megan Ou-Yang
How does an Avenues learner build their foundational English literacy skills in the lower primary division? This ACC will dive into the Avenues Literacy curriculum and approach that is implemented in grades 1-2. This phase in literacy development sets the foundations for the future, as students are building their phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics concepts, fluency and working through decodable texts. Attendants can expect to get a taste of the explicit and targeted instruction as well as understand how these instructional components build up to more complex skills in upper primary grades.
This ACC is also open to interested parents of grades pre-K through K+. If you would like to learn more about the program and teaching in the lower grades of Primary Division, welcome to join us!
