Dear Avenues Community,

As we embark on a new school year, we come together to recognize the remarkable individuals who embody our shared mission. At Avenues, education transcends the ordinary; it is a transformative journey enriched by the diverse experiences and talents of our faculty from over 15 different countries representing the six continents.

At Avenues Shenzhen, our global search for talent reflects our commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment. Many of our educators come from other Avenues campuses. While educational experience is important, it is essential that their experience aligns with our core values and project-based approach. We seek educators who not only possess knowledge but also embody the spirit of compassion and connection that defines our community.

Last year, we received 2,294 applications, with an average hiring rate of just 1 to 3 percent. Our hiring process is rigorous and multifaceted, involving CV screening, phone or in-person interviews, demo teaching lessons with debriefs, and comprehensive career history and reference checks. It’s an extensive process designed to ensure we find the best fit for our school.

Once our educators join us, we strive to ensure they feel supported and valued. Our experiential orientation program, Embark, begins in early August and serves as an immersive two-week introduction to Avenues culture, pedagogy, and collaboration with returning teachers. This program is designed to help educators transition smoothly into their roles, fostering a sense of belonging from the very start.

Support continues through our weekly routines, where educators engage with their managers and specialist coaches during cohort meetings. This ongoing commitment to development is a cornerstone of our approach to education. In my 26 years across eight schools globally, Avenues stands out for its unique practice of one-on-one (O3) weekly meetings. These sacred moments provide space for meaningful feedback and alignment, allowing our educators to grow in an environment rooted in mutual respect and understanding.

We also prioritize in-house professional growth through our Professional Growth and Learning (PGL) program. Here, educators come together in feedback cohorts and grade-level meetings, sharing insights and learning from one another. Our framework for professional growth suggests that people learn most effectively through a mix of experiential, social, and formal learning methods.

As we approach Teachers’ Day, let us take a moment to honor the unwavering commitment of our educators. They are not just instructors; they are mentors, guides, and advocates for our students. Their passion and dedication empower our children to navigate the complexities of the world with empathy and courage.

In this shared endeavor, your partnership is essential. Together, we create a vibrant community where every child can explore, discover, and thrive. Our work is not merely academic; it is a commitment to nurturing the whole child and cultivating a love for learning that extends beyond the classroom.

We are proud of our teachers!

In partnership,

Corey Watlington

Deputy Head of School
